For many people, buying a home of their own is the ideal housing solution.
Private Rental
Some people in Shetland rent their home from a private landlord.
This can be a quick way of obtaining accommodation and is usually quite flexible. However, it is usually more expensive than renting from our Association or the Council. The choice of properties available at any particular time may be very limited, particularly in the summer months when many are let to visitors.
There are various ways in which you might track down a property to rent:
- Properties are advertised in the Shetland Times, in the Shetland News website and in the classified section on the Shetlink website.
- You might be able to find a property through local solicitors.
- You could check the notice boards in local shops, post offices and supermarkets.
- Outside the holiday season, you could enquire about holiday homes that may be available for a winter let. Many of these appear on the Shetland Visitor website.
You might also ask around in your local area, or at work. Someone may know about a property that is not advertised on the open market.
There’s some very useful information about renting privately on the Shetland Islands Council website and on the Shelter website.
